BSIS GUARD CARD POWERS TO ARREST (PTA) COURSE

The first required training is the BSIS Powers to Arrest training, also called the Guard Card.  This is the minimum required training.  It is an 8 hour class of all classroom/lecture on the basics of the legal powers a security guard has in California, (Citizen’s Arrest), the concepts of observing and reporting, and professionalism within the vocation.

Once you complete the class, you need to go and fingerprinted at a licensed Live-Scan location. (Most UPS stores do this.)  You then need to submit an application to BSIS upon completion.
This BSIS Powers to Arrest course costs $100.00.  This does not include the Live-scan fingerprinting fees or the State’s fees.  It is only for the class.

Initial Firearm Permit

This allows you to open (exposed) carry a firearm when you are in uniform.  You need to complete this 2-day 14-hour course to be able to apply for your Exposed Firearms Permit.

You need to submit an application to BSIS upon completion.  You then qualify for each specific caliber you intend to carry.  Firearms requalification is needed twice each year in order for you to renew at the end of two years.  In other words, you need to requalify four times by the time you renew after two years.
You need to have a valid Guard card, or have completed the Guard card class and be in process in order to take this class. It is a mandatory prerequisite.

Taking the BSIS Powers to Arrest class at Bullseye the day before the 2-day Exposed Firearm class at Bullseye meets this requirement.

The course is 8 hours long on the first day and is all classroom/lecture.  The second day is 6 hours long and has the live-fire/range portion.
